What is PCOS?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. In fact, PCOS is the most common endocrine condition in women of reproductive age. It is characterized by a combination of symptoms, including irregular menstrual periods, excess androgen (male hormone) levels, and enlarged ovaries that contain small collections of fluid (follicles), located in each ovary as seen during an ultrasound exam.

PCOS is associated with long term metabolic and psychological conditions such as diabetes, depression, and CVD (cardiovascular disease). It is a chronic condition with potential long lasting effects on a woman’s life.

Dementia is a general term used to describe a decline in cognitive abilities (such as memory, language, and decision-making) that is severe enough to interfere with a person's daily life. It is not a specific disease but rather a group of symptoms that are caused by various underlying conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and others.

High blood pressure is one of the risk factors for Coronary Heart Disease (CHD); a chronic lifestyle disease. CHD is a slow process and starts with fatty deposit build up on the inner walls of the arteries of the heart and the brain. This may lead to narrowing of the arteries that supply the heart and the brain with oxygen, and this may lead to a heart attack or stroke.

While selective breeding has existed for thousands of years, modern biotechnology is more efficient and effective because seed developers are able to directly modify the genome of the crop.

This is part 2 in our new series on plant-based lifestyles. FACT: Many high fat, high sugar, salty, refined foods do taste good! The simple truth: In the bigger picture, these foods do have a place….. what is a family function without that traditional trifle, for instance? And that is exactly it: eaten now and then (not daily or even weekly!) these foods are fine and not damaging to the body.

There is compelling evidence that following a plant-based diet can change your life for the better. Swapping animal-based-protein sources for plant-based-protein sources can help you lose weight, live longer, and even combat disease. Of course, one of the best sources of plant protein is the humble soy bean! Soy beans are an incredibly diverse and important food source, with scientifically proven health benefits. Why then, are consumers questioning its inclusion in daily diets?
